A Group Backed by Huge Companies Like Walmart and Boeing Is Fighting Back Against the Drug-Industry Middlemen in Trouble for Overcharging Customers

Companies that provide healthcare coverage to their workers are fed up with the controversial ways drug-industry middlemen drum up profits.

Now some of them are fighting back.

The Purchaser Business Group on Health, a coalition of about 40 companies, has launched a pharmacy-benefit manager, or PBM, of its own that aims to give companies a clearer view into and control over what they spend on prescription drugs for their workers.

The PBM, called EmsanaRx, is part of PBGH’s new for-profit company Emsana Health, which aims to build healthcare products that meet big employers’ needs and lowers their costs. PBGH is backed by large companies including Boeing, Costco, Microsoft, and Walmart.
